All about dental implants

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a solution to replace lost teeth. An implant is a titanium screw that is inserted into the jawbone, on which crowns or prostheses are then placed to replace the lost tooth in appearance and functionality.

95% of the implants are made of titanium because it is a biocompatible material that allows osseointegration, that is, fusion with the bone. Although there are no known reports of patients who have suffered an allergy or reaction to titanium, some people with allergies to other metals are reluctant to use titanium in their implants. As an alternative, there are zirconium implants that are not as versatile as titanium implants because they are made in one piece instead of two pieces like titanium implants.

What types of materials are used for implants?

Titanium dental implants:
The titanium implant is the material par excellence in this type of dental procedures.  This is because it has a very high percentage of success and effectiveness, that is to say, it has a higher adhesion and durability in the long term than zirconium.

Zirconium dental implants:
Zirconium is a synthetic material that can be used just like titanium, but does not have the same effectiveness. It can be used when the patient expressly requests it because he/she is allergic to the other material or for any other reason. If this is not the case, titanium will always be used.

What are the parts of an implant?

The implants consist of several distinct parts :

  1. The crown is the prosthesis that simulates the tooth and that will cover the abutment.
  2. Transepithelial abutments are those that support the teeth. They can be screwed or cemented.
  3. The implant that is fixed to the gum and attached under the bone.

How are dental implants placed?

In our dental clinic in Barcelona we are specialists in 3D digital guided surgery.
This technique allows us to place dental implants in the exact position where we want them, which helps to increase the safety of treatment and reduce patient morbidity. That is, thanks to this modern technology, we reduce to a minimum the discomfort that the patient may feel when placing dental implants.

In most cases, this technique of dental implantology allows us to perform interventions with almost no cuts in the gum. In general, we do not even have to stitch the gums. All these benefits translate into a very comfortable and painless postoperative period for the patient. Especially in comparison with classic treatments, in which it is common to spend several days with pain and discomfort that make it difficult to resume the routine.

Who are candidates for dental implants?

Practically everyone who has lost one or more teeth is a candidate for dental implants.
There are very few situations in which implants are not indicated. Even when the bone is insufficient, there are bone regeneration techniques that allow a correct osseointegration of the implant with guarantees.

In order to have the maximum guarantee that our implant will be correctly placed, the professional must carry out a good study to evaluate parameters such as bone quantity and quality, as well as the state of the adjacent pieces, with the subsequent placement of the dental crown in mind. These studies are mainly radiological. A scan to see the state of the bone that will house the implant will undoubtedly give us peace of mind at the time of surgery, since we will always know what to expect at
.

On other occasions, however, other types of diagnostic tests may be requested, apart from radiological ones, such as “study models”, where our prosthetic laboratory, following the instructions of the implantologist and/or prosthodontist, would simulate on a plaster model what the final result of the work to be carried out would be like.

Therefore, and as we indicated at the beginning, the candidates to receive this type of implants are the great majority, but always accompanied by an exhaustive study.

Advantages of dental implants

Strengthen the jaws

A little known fact about tooth loss is that once a tooth is gone, the jaw bone beneath it begins to deteriorate. This is because the teeth and jaws form an important reciprocal system. Just as the teeth depend on the jawbone for support, the jawbone needs the teeth to remain strong and healthy. Dental implants not only prevent the jaw from deteriorating, they actually stimulate bone growth.

Protect healthy teeth

In addition to the jaw, our teeth also support each other. As soon as we lose a tooth, the ones around it will begin to drift. This, combined with the deterioration of the jaw, makes it much more likely that they will fall out as well. If we lose a tooth, it makes sense to replace it with a dental implant as soon as possible to avoid future complications.
