Types of dental implants and materials

There are several types of dental implants depending on the material (the vast majority are titanium, which is highly biocompatible, though zirconia versions also exist), on the number of teeth to replace (a single tooth, several, or a full arch) and on the timing of placement. The right type for you depends on the area, the available bone and your needs, and it is determined by the specialist after a study.

By material

The most widely used material is titanium, a biocompatible metal that the bone integrates very well and that has decades of clinical backing. There are also zirconia (ceramic) implants, a metal-free alternative that some patients choose for aesthetic reasons or sensitivities. Both aim for the same thing: to integrate into the bone and serve as a stable base for the crown.

By the number of teeth to replace

  • Single implant: replaces one tooth with an implant and its crown, without touching the neighbouring teeth.
  • Several teeth: with two or more implants, a fixed bridge on implants can be supported.
  • Full arch: when all the teeth are missing, techniques such as All-on-4 or All-on-6 allow a fixed prosthesis on just a few implants.

By timing of placement

In some cases the implant is placed on the same day as the extraction (immediate implant) and, if conditions allow, with a provisional prosthesis through immediate loading. In others, the area is left to heal first. The decision depends on the state of the bone and the gum.

The role of the bone

Any type of implant needs a sufficient base of bone. If it is missing, a bone regeneration or a bone graft may be considered first. That is why the first step is always a study with imaging tests.

Which one is best for you

There is no universally better type: the ideal one is the one that fits your case. A good diagnosis weighs the area (aesthetic or chewing), the quantity and quality of bone, the health of your gums and your preferences. Whatever the type, what matters is good planning and proper maintenance afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is titanium or zirconia better?

Titanium is the standard thanks to its long track record and excellent integration. Zirconia is a metal-free option valued in aesthetic cases or for sensitivities. The specialist will advise you according to your case.

Do all implants last the same?

Properly placed and cared for, all types are built to last. The decisive factors are planning and maintenance, as we explain in how long a dental implant lasts.

How do I know which type I need?

Only after a personalised study. The choice depends on factors that can only be seen with an examination and imaging tests.
