At what age can you get dental implants?

Dental implants can be placed once bone growth is complete, which usually happens around the end of adolescence, and there is no upper age limit: older people are excellent candidates as long as they enjoy good general health, enough bone and healthy gums. More than age, what matters is your overall and oral health.

The minimum age: when growth is complete

In young people it is best to wait until the jaw bone has finished growing before placing an implant, because if it is placed too early the implanted tooth could end up misaligned as the rest keeps growing. That moment varies from person to person, so the specialist assesses it with tests, not just by the age on your ID.

No upper age limit

At the other end there is no limit: there are patients who get implants at 70, 80 or beyond with excellent results. Age alone is not a contraindication. What is assessed is general health, medication, gum condition and the amount of bone.

What matters more than age

  • General health: well-controlled conditions do not usually prevent treatment; uncontrolled diabetes or smoking do increase the risk.
  • Available bone: if it is lacking, a prior bone regeneration can be considered.
  • Gum health: any gum disease should be treated first.

Implants in older people

For many older people, implants are a huge improvement: they recover the ability to chew, leave the removable denture behind and gain confidence and quality of life. Solutions such as All-on-4 or All-on-6 make a complete fixed arch possible even when a lot of bone has been lost.

Cases that need a more careful assessment

Some situations (certain medical treatments, osteoporosis with specific drugs, poorly controlled diabetes) do not rule out an implant but call for more careful planning and, at times, coordination with your doctor. That is why an individual study is essential.
